Story
Introduction – Annadan: The Most Sacred Offering to Ancestors
In the holy fortnight of Pitra Paksha, honouring and nourishing the souls of our departed ancestors (Pitras) is a sacred duty described in various scriptures, including the Garuda Purana, Mahabharata, and Matsya Purana.
While offerings such as Tarpan and Pind Daan are important, Annadan—feeding the poor, saints, and pilgrims—is considered the highest form of Shraddha. It is said:
"Annadanam Param Danam" – Of all donations, the gift of food is supreme.
From 8th September to 21st September 2025, during the sacred Pitra Paksha period, Kashi Archan Foundation will conduct the Pitra Paksha Annadan Seva at the holy ghats and temples of Kashi (Varanasi). This spiritual seva will serve fresh, sattvik, vegetarian meals to poor and needy individuals, sadhus, and pilgrims, ensuring your heartfelt offerings reach those who truly need it.
Participating in this seva brings peace to your forefathers, removes Pitru Dosha, and grants divine blessings of health, prosperity, and protection for your entire lineage.
Scriptural Importance of Annadan During Pitra Paksha
According to Garuda Purana, during Pitra Paksha the souls of departed ancestors descend to the earthly realm, expecting sincere offerings from their descendants. If they are satisfied—especially through food offerings—their blessings flow abundantly to the family.
The Mahabharata (Anushasana Parva) also glorifies Annadan as the ultimate duty for those seeking to uplift their ancestors, saying that feeding the poor is akin to directly feeding the Pitras in their spiritual realm.
During Pitra Paksha, the spiritual potency of Annadan multiplies many times over, making it an act of immeasurable punya (divine merit).
“Feeding one hungry soul during Pitra Paksha is said to please a thousand ancestors in the higher worlds.”
