Steps in performing Mahamrityunjaya Mantra Jaap ritual

According to the scriptures, the benefits of Mahamrityunjaya Mantra are through Purashcharan method, which is of five types-

  • chanting (जाप
  • havan (हवन)
  • tarpan (तर्पण)
  • Marjayami (मार्जयामि)
  • offering food to brahman (ब्राह्मणभोजन)

Jaap: According to the scriptures, by reciting the Mahamrityunjaya mantra for a quarter of a million, this mantra awakens and gives incalculable benefits.

Havan:‘Om’ and ‘Namah’ are not counted while chanting in Purashcharan method. After the chanting number is completed, the tenth part of one and a half lakh chanting of Mahamrityunjaya mantra i.e., at the end of 12500 mantras, the Havan is performed by applying ‘Swaha’.

Tarpan” The tenth part of the Havan is to be performed, i.e., 1250. Tarpan is performed at the end of the mantra by applying tarpayami.

Marjan: The tenth part of the tarpan i.e., 125 mantras are marjan, in which the method of marjan is completed by applying ‘marjayami’ or ‘abhisinchayami’ at the end of the mantra, taking pressure and sprinkling it on its back side.

Brahmin food: The tenth part of Marjan i.e., 13 brahmins are fed food.

Materials required for Maha Mrityunjaya Jaap Anusthan

Maha Mrityunjaya Jaap can also be performed at home. Still, certain things are needed, such as Ganga Jal, cow, milk, ghee, honey, sugar, white cloth, sacred thread (janeu), betel nuts, tulsi and bel leaves, datura, bhang, sandalwood paste, rice, lamps, incense, flowers, fruits, and sweets, roli, sacred red and white thread, and so on.

Rules of Mahamrityunjaya Jaap Anusthan

  • While chanting the Mahamrityunjaya Mantra, the body and mind should be clean.
  • While chanting this mantra, you should have one of the Shivalinga or the idol/picture of Lord Shankar or the Mahamrityunjaya Yantra in the form of a symbol.
  • At the time of chanting the Mahamrityunjaya Mantra and while doing any other worship or worship, keep your face towards the east direction.
  • Chanting of the mantra should always be done only on the posture made of Kusha.
  • For the mantra to be fruitful, it is very important to pronounce it clearly, otherwise chanting the mantra will not be beneficial. 
  • Do not chant the Mahamrityunjaya mantra at a slow or fast speed. While chanting, move your lips, but the sound is not heard, this is how the chanting is done.
  • After chanting the Mahamrityunjaya Mantra and after chanting, one should stay away from meat, liquor and other types of addictions.
  • Chanting should be done by lighting incense and lamps.
  • To chant the Mahamrityunjaya mantra, only Rudraksha mala (beads) should be used.
  • The mantra should be chanted by keeping the rudrakshaMala in the gau (cow)Mukhi.
