Story of the Temple

Bankati Hanuman Temple is one of the most ancient Hanuman temples of Kashi. Long ago, there was a dense forest at this place, in which there were big trees all around.


According to popular belief, the idol in Bankati Hanuman Temple was found in the middle of the forest itself. That's why this idol is called Bankati Hanuman Ji the literal meaning which is 'Hanuman Ji amidst the Forest.

People slowly started worshiping Bankati Hanuman Ji in large numbers. During his stay in Kashi, Goswami Tulsidas, the author of Ramcharit Manas, used to regularly visit the Bankati Hanuman Temple to worship Hanuman Ji.

Tulsidas Ji all his life had great faith in Hanuman Ji and he worshipped Bankati Hanuman Ji with full devotion. It is said that once Bankati Hanuman Ji met Tulsidas Ji in the form of a leper (a
person affected with Leprosy) and gave his darshan.

The Shiva Mahapurana mentions Hanuman Ji as the 11th Rudra Avatar of Bhagwan Shiv. Bhagwan Shankar in the avatar of Mahavir Hanuman was there with Bhagwan Shri Ram
assisting and helping him in all his works and endeavors.

Lord Hanuman's strength was considered extraordinary, capable of even lifting the Drona Giri Parvat. He is also known as Vira, Mahavira, and Mahabali for his incapable strength and
wisdom.

Both the Sankat Mochan Hanuman temple and the Bankati Hanuman Temple belong to Hanuman Ji, who is the chief devotee of Bhagwan Shri Ram.

This Bankati Hanuman Temple is located in a very large complex. The vigrah swaroop of Bankati Hanuman Ji is installed in the middle of the Temple premises. The Bankati Hanuman temple is one of the most ancient Hanuman Temples of Varanasi.

Importance of the Temple

  1. It is said about Bankati Hanuman Temple that by taking his darshan continuously for 41 days all the wishes of the devotees are fulfilled.
  2. According to the head priest of the Bankati Hanuman Temple, during the establishment of Kashi Hindu University, Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya had darshan of Bankati Hanuman Temple for 41 consecutive days.
  3. All kinds of sorrows and sins go away by taking the darshans in the Bankati Hanuman Temple. This ancient Bankati Hanuman Temple was renovated in 1972.
  4. In the years 2008-09 also some parts of the temple were reconstructed and beautified by the Hanuman Temple devotees. The swaroop of Hanuman Ji is installed in the north-east direction of the Bankati Hanuman temple which is very significant.
  5. A small temple of Ram-Janaki is situated in the main temple complex just in front of the idol of Bankati Hanuman Ji. Also there is a huge Peepal tree in the temple premises. People light lamps on the platform built around it.
  6. According to the belief, worshiping Bankati Hanuman Ji removes all kinds of suffering and the health of the devotee remains good and full of wealth.

  1. Tuesday and Saturday are the most crowded days in the week in Bankati Hanuman Temple where many devotees visit for their prayers. In General, the temple remains crowded throughout the week.
  2. Ram Navami, Seeta Navami and Hanuman Jayanti are some of the important festivals celebrated in the Bankati Hanuman Temple when the entire temple is decked for the devotees to come and visit the Temple.
  3. The months of Shravan, Karthik, and Chaitra witnessed large footfalls in the Bankati Hanuman Temple. Many community food programs and celebrations are organized around the Bankati Hanuman Temple at this time.
  4. The 9 days of Navratri and annual celebrations during Maha Shivratri tithi are also important festivals celebrated in the Bankati Hanuman Temple of Varanasi.
  5. Hanuman Jayanti which falls on the Shukla Chitra Poornima is the most powerful day for doing any Puja, sadhana, and Hawan of Bankati Hanuman.

The closest airport to reach the Bankati Hanuman Temple is Varanasi Airport, located 28 kilometers away. Alternatively, Prayagraj Airport, situated 120 kilometers from Varanasi, also provides access to the temple. Plan your pilgrimage conveniently with easy access from these airports. 🛩️
To reach the Bankati Hanuman Temple by train, disembark at Varanasi Railway Station, the nearest railway station, just 7 kilometers away from the temple. Conveniently access the temple from the station with state government buses and taxis readily available for transportation.
Devotees can also reach the Bankati Hanuman Temple by road. Upon arriving at the Varanasi Bus Stand, one can opt for a state government bus or a taxi to reach the temple. The temple is approximately 2 kilometers away from Assi Ghat and 8 kilometers away from Varanasi Railway Station. 🚌
